We started the rowing team in 2015, for Spring Lake students. In 2016, we formally extended the program to Grand Haven High School and our two local schools row together as a combined club sport. Our goal is to raise $20,000 to purchase additional boats and a floating dock. We started the program 2 years ago, with one boat borrowed from GVSU. We now own a 45-foot trailer, two launch boats with outboards, 28 oars, 10 rowing machines, a weight machine, 8 rowing shells (two 8s, four 4s, a Quad, and a single) and many other pieces of miscellaneous equipment. We have had 65 different students come through our program in the past 2 years and currently have 27 rowers for the Spring Season which just started. Our assistant coach is one of our former rowers.
Our hard work is starting to pay off. At the Forest Hills 2017 indoor rowing Ergatta, Emma Boersen took first place in the Women’s Novice division. Tyler Harms took 8th in the Men’s Novice division, and Sarah Walker finished just 5 seconds out of a top ten finish in the Women’s Open division. We ended up 6th out of 9 teams.
Today, there are only about 25 high school (many nationally ranked scholastically) rowing programs in the State of Michigan. By contrast, there are 7 Michigan colleges and universities with rowing programs. There are over 8,500 men and women involved in collegiate rowing. This translates into many college scholarships for students at Big 10, the Ivy League and national Liberal Arts colleges. These are opportunities unavailable to most other students.
Please help give our students the tools they need only to succeed in rowing, but in life as well, by making a tax-deductible donation. Thank you!
